Today, the standwise forest inventory in Finland is based on airborne laser scanning, the research of which was started by Juha Hyyppä in 1997 in Finland (profiling waveform radar signal of forests studied in 1987-1996). As a result of co-operation of J. Hyyppä and Forestry Development Centre Tapio, Arbonaut Oy, Blom-Kartta Oy, University of Joensuu (prof. Maltamo), the new technology is now applied in Finland by forestry centers outsourcing the ALS data acquisitions and value adding to companies, such as Blom Kartta, Terratec and Arbonaut. The saving for the society is more than 20M€/year.
